Representatives

Your representativesYour union representative is a full-time employee of Local 888 authorized by the leadership of your union to provide professional services and representation to the membership. Far more than just a “40 hour work week.” The Field Staff is expected to consider the widely varying work schedules of those we represent in our to best meet their needs. Among the diverse range of responsibilities, Union Representatives speak with members at the work sites to answer their questions, greet new employees, address problems and issues, police the contract and investigate violations, and work with management with the aim of resolving grievances and potential problems or disputes.

You can count on your Union representative help you and your co-workers negotiate your contract, conduct proposal and ratification meetings, visit your company and/or hold regularly scheduled union meetings, help you with your grievances, and to keep you informed about the happenings at the Union by passing out material.

Your Shop Steward is one of your co-workers who is either elected or appointed to serve as your on site representative. A shop steward wears many hats – he or she is a problem solver, a leader, a communicator, an educator and an organizer. When members have a problem they bring it to their shop steward. Some problems are job related; others are not. The Shop Steward helps the member and others who may be affected to identify possible solutions and to work for change. Union members look to the steward for knowledge, experience and guidance. Stewards are the key point of contact between the members and their union. Stewards help members understand how to use and interpret the contract, participate in union events, learn about broader issues that affect them and their communities. Stewards also assist Local union leaders organize members to participate in activities designed to improve conditions on the job and our community.
