Welcome to the Local 888 family. Local 888 has a history of striving to improve the working conditions of its members on the job and also trying to address varied problems away from the workplace. Local 888 is a chartered body of the United Food and Commercial Workers International. The UFCW is an organization of approximately 1.4 million workers in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The International Union consists of about 400 locals working together to improve working conditions for all workers. Since the UFCW represents virtually every type of worker, local unions can be diverse. For example, the members of Local 888 work in many different industries, including retail department stores, health care services, insurance sales, plumbing supply houses, machine shops, warehouses and industrial manufacturing shops. Local 888 is one of the most diverse locals in our international union. We represent over 5,000 workers in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut area.

We have a long and proud history. Local 888 was first chartered in 1957 by the Retail Clerks International Association. The first election took place at the union's headquarters at 250 West 57th Street in New York City. This resulted in the seating of its first officers : President Sidney Heller, Secretary-treasurer Many Barfield and Recording Secretary Jerry Perrault. During our 49 year history over thirteen different Locals have merged together to form present day Local 888. We have grown from a staff of 5 in 1957 to a staff of over thirty today. Although, we have grown over the years, our commitment to our members has stayed the same. We believe that the power in the union rests with the membership and we are here to help you protect and fight for your rights. The membership runs the local union, elects officers, determines local union policy, helps negotiate contracts, resolves grievances and assists in organizing new members.
